Not him but I made the same upgrade. It's faster, has marshmallow, usb-c, a fingerprint sensor, a bigger screen,a front facing speaker, and a MUCH better camera. But, It's way too big after using the moto x, the built in 'Active Display' pales in comparison to Motorola's, and amoled is quite nice, but the screen on the 5X is excellent for LCD (if you get a good one. There are some qc issues apparently). I bought the 5X intending to root because I accidentally updated past 4.4.3 on my moto X and lost root, but my rooting attempts were unsuccessful on the 5X and got me stuck in a bootloop (which I managed to fix), so I've been running stock. A lot of the time I pick up my old moto x and contemplate using it instead, just because it feels so perfect in your hand.
But honestly, if the size doesn't bother you at all it's definitely worth the upgrade to the 5X, especially since the price is nowhere near flagship levels and is so much better than most other flagships out there today. As someone who used to root back in the HTC Incredible days and became increasingly annoyed about having to wipe my phone everyday the wind blew to get the newest update and latest radio, kernel, etc. What exactly do you gain out of rooting a vanilla android phone like the 5X? I understand removing bloatware off the manufacturer/carrier-ified phones, but I'd love to hear what you gain from rooting a vanilla android phone. In reading this it comes off very 'anti-rooting' which couldn't be further from the case, I want to go back to my rooting ways, but I just don't see a benefit and plenty of (old) downsides).
I've had it since launch and I still don't like the size of the Nexus 5X but my Moto X was on its last legs so I didn't really have any other options (i'm on Verizon so no Z3C / Z5C). Other than that, it's a great phone. Pros: stock, fingerprint reader, camera (both front facing and rear are nice), super fast charging, doze Cons: size (I never use the front facing speakers, I'd rather have a smaller phone), USB C to C cable in the box (had to buy a bunch of new cables and adapters), Moto Display Ambient Display.
