Itunes 10.5 For Mac

I have an Apple TV 1st gen and I can see it in iTunes 10.5 - I did reset and re-setup Apple TV to get the 5-digit code and then tell iTunes to access the device. I can access the device from the computer and stream music out to it; I can also pull videos from iTunes running on the computer to the Apple TV from the TV. However, there are still issues that I want to see improved: 1. I can only stream stuff from the TV (i.e., by using the controls on the TV) when iTunes is launched on the computer (I'm using 10.7.1 or 10.7.2).

The 'Shared TV Shows' etc. Items only appear when iTunes is running on the computer. I am unable to push music or videos or photos down to the hard disk on the Apple TV - which means the TV must stream. I find this sad, for two reasons: A it means that the 160 Gb hard disk I purchased (the Apple TV) is useless (I purchased this version in part because I liked the idea of not having to depend on a wireless or wired network to lag-stream my content), and B it seems like Apple is supporting the newer version of Apple TV that is IMHO crippled by being unable to store content locally. This last is strange, because it would appear as though iTunes now special-cases the Apple TV instead of treating it like an iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone or iPod that has local storage. I mean, how hard could it be to ask the device whether it can hold any content?

Clearly it did so before. Thanks for the suggetions. Well for some reason it started working (appears in iTunes 10.5 on Windows 7) and have no idea why. I checked router settings, rebooted, re-entered ID code etc etc. Its very, very buggy.

Yes it appears it will only allow me to STREAM to it though I haven't tried to sync to my Mac lately to see if its a Windows issue only. I'm totaly with you 100 pecent. I prefer NOT to to depend on streaming to my Television (like yourself) for the simple reason of making it 'wife friendly as possible':-) She's not computer savvy.period. If she can't get it working within 30 seconds, she gets frustrated and goes and fires up the DVD player.

I've had several instances where network issues have crippled access to personal content (like photos) because of networking issues, or iTunes is off, PC is down whatever. Apple is focusing on driving their iTunes sales/rental by making it perhaps more difficult acccess local content. I've considered Boxee or other competitive producst but non of them so far appear to have as slick of an interface as Apple TV. They should fix this or allow external drives to be connected without me having to hack it. We'll see what happens. I keep hearing of a intergrated Apple TV into a HDTV.hmmmm.

Have had the problem that original poster described and been trying to figure out alternatives. Seems that turning on home sharing and then adding the device allows me to use the ATV 1st Gen with iTunes 10.5 as I was and prefer to: using its hard drive to play music to my stereo, no iTunes loaded on PC. I never turned on home sharing on with previous configurations of the ATV. This time after turning on home sharing ATV and iTunes exchanged codes and ATV then registered with Apple Store and was back to being able to push ripped music to the ATV hard drive. Hoping it doesn't drop out again and that perhaps this works for others. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
