I am a researcher for BASF AG, and a former Win2K sysadmin for a small cluster of research computers at Cornell University. Currently in our offices, my colleagues and I have four Dell Dimension 2350 PCs, and we are having a serious problem with the use of CD-RWs. Here is the issue: I recently purchased a Verbatim DatalifePlus Ultra-Speed CD-RW disc, for use with these machines.

I first tried the disc with my personal machine, a homebuilt PC with similar specs to the Dells but with a Yamaha CRW-F1ZE (44x24x44) CD-RW drive, rather than the NEC NR-9300A (48x24x28) CD-RW drives found in our Dells, then with the Dells themselves. All machines were able to write to a blank CD-RW disc. On the Dell machines (WinXPHome), when attempting to erase the disc, I receive a 'non-specific' error (00/00/00) with Roxio CD Creator 5, an error with DirectCD, and a power calibration error with Nero 6, while XP's integrated burning software completes with no errors but fails to erase the disc.

I have tried altering the write speed, play with other drive parameters, disabling our anti-virus software and disabling all relevant background programs services related to CD writing, to no avail. In contrast, my home machine is able to erase the same disc with absolutely no problems whatsoever. From reading about this sort of thing on the Dell site and elsewhere, I began to believe that a firmware update might be the solution; I note that similar recommendations have been given for a Samsung drive Dell uses, if memory serves, and in general it seems that this sort of thing can at least sometimes be addressed by firmware updates. No firmware updates for this drive are available, however, either on the Dell site or on the NEC site. Further web-searching revealed the following two sites, each with the same files available for download: Note that the firmware revision of the Dell drives is 1.05B, whereas these sites have 2.11 and 2.12 available for download. The readme.txt of the 2.12 firmware update reads as follows, making me strongly believe it would address this problem: F/W revision 1.15: Original MP version -Non Mt.

Rainier support. 2.11: New version -Mt. Rainier supported. 2.12: Issue on 'BHA B's clip(writing software)' function. Media error occurs when a folder is deleted after coping Ultra High Speed CD-RW / Bug fix on Mt. Rainier function. Error occurs if packet write / read / eject functions are being repeated while background formatting.

Add TDK 90min media support. However, there is a significant problem with this fix, that the file goes on to explain: This update will only work with original NEC ND-9300A 'RETAIL' devices, not with OEM versions from HP, PB, MEDION, DELL, Gateway etc.(you can destroy device!) I am in no mood to destroy these drives, hence I have not applied the firmware update. However, this puts us in a rather difficult position: All four of our CD-RW drives are completely useless with respect to erasing CD-RWs, which makes using CD-RW disks highly inconvenient. These machines were not cheap, but they were expected to work - The fact that they do not, due to outdated firmware, combined with the lack of any way for me to update the firmware safely, is something that I want to see addressed ASAP. We need either a Dell-specific firmware update, or replacement drives of a different type.

I look forward to hearing from Dell support personnel at their earliest possible convenience. Daniel Schmidt BASF AG. Just a brief update: As added fun, I tried erasing the aforementioned Verbatim CD-RW at home and bringing it in to work to burn it. The last time I did this, I performed a quick erase of the same disk, and was able to burn files on it using the Dells. This time, having performed a full erase, the Dell was unable to burn in Nero 6. I received something along the lines of a 'calibration data area full' error, and the burn then failed at 3%.

In short, these machines now appear to become completely useless, with respect to burning CD-RW discs, after just a couple of burns, in addition to the problems already covered involving erasing files or formatting the disc. This is truly lovely, since that basically makes all CD-RW discs equivalent to CD-Rs but at about ten times the cost, and harder to read in older drives as well. I'm surprised no one else has reported this problem, because it's quite general, but it may be that most folks aren't burning and erasing CD-RWs enough to notice.

At any rate, I await a reply. Daniel Schmidt BASF AG. This is a peer-to-peer forum, and if your waiting for any reply from Dell Support, it might not happen. Sometimes a Dell moderator will give his/her advice. Your best bet is to contact Dell tech support for the latest advice with this problem.

Just as a point of interest, there are many posts on this and other forums concerning CDRW burning. There seems to be little compatability between burners, when recording on one machine and burning or erasing on another machine. Most members on this forum will agree, that at the present cost of CD-R disks it's more convient to use them for transporting data back and forth.

Once you burn a CD-R and close it out is is readable on any CD-rom. I think that I'm one of the old die-hard CD-RW users (Packet Writing), and even between my 2 home machines, there is a lack of compatability. Sometimes it will work and other times I get all kinds of errors and the disk needs to be re-formated (All data gone) Here is a link to another forum with similar problems and a lot of links for you to peruse. Maybe it will shed some light on the subject. Feel free to post back! Hi.dev.null, sorry to hear you have the same problems, though I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

Current status: No solutions yet. That I am forced by Dell to contact their technical support division in France is a big obstacle for me, as my French is getting better but I lack the technical vocabulary I need for the explanation I've made above. Not to mention that the last time I tried to call, I was simply disconnected at some point, for no apparent reason. This, and the fact that they are exceptionally good at ignoring messages in forums like this one is also a major source of frustration for me and my colleagues here. It would be nice to at least get an acknowledgement of this problem, rather than the usual run-around involving a full system diagnostic which tells me nothing. It would also be nice to know that they're working on the problem, or at least aware of it, or maybe to have some sort of list of recommended / working media versus media that does not work, if it's really a media compatibility issue. With customer support like this, however, I have definitely learned something, and will be sure to recommend to BASF, as well as my friends and colleagues, that they do not buy Dells in the future.

In the meantime, if you run into anything, please let me know, I have e-mail notification enabled for this thread so I should see responses pretty rapidly. Daniel Schmidt BASF AG. 2.12 version of the firmware was applied approximately 2 months ago and I haven't had a problem so far. Of course this firmware is not supported by Dell or NEC and you're fore-warned that it might break your drive, but I decided to try it anyway and it seems to be working just fine. Your mileage may vary though.

I had trouble finding a place to download the firmware. I think I found it on a german website. I downloaded a couple versions just to be sure, both filenames were:1057FirmwareNR-9300A212.ZIP and tt1057FirmwareNR-9300A212.ZIP The actual firmware update file inside the archives was: NR98V212.exe Best wishes.dev.null, Bless you for trying this. I'm really happy to hear that it worked, and I will be testing the same firmware on my own machine immediately.

I'm glad someone cares about this; Dell certainly doesn't seem too concerned. FYI to all reading, you can find pretty much any firmware you want here: Firmware revisions 2.11 and 2.12 for this drive in particular (the NEC-9300A) can be found here: I think I first found it on a Japanese website, maybe the NEC Japan website?

But I'm not sure. In any case, good luck to all those who try, and again, thanks to.dev.null for the response. Let's hope this solves my problems. Daniel Schmidt BASF AG.dev.null, Question for you.

I got 1057FirmwareNR-9300A212.ZIP from the site I mentioned, and I unzipped NR98V212.exe, just as you described. However, when I execute this file, it gives me the following error: 'Target NEC NR-9300A is not found correctly.'

According to the accompanying readme.txt, this update only works for drives with v2.11 of the firmware; obviously, this is not possible with a Dell drive, since Dell doesn't go that high with their OEM firmware. Therefore, I'm wondering how you tricked this utility into flashing your Dell drive anyway. Any suggestions? I didn't see a command-line reference for the executable anywhere, that was the only other thing I could think of to force the update. Which Dell model did you try this on? Daniel Schmidt BASF AG. I faintly remember having the same problem 'Target NEC NR-9300A is not found correctly.'

I'm not sure exactly what I did to apply the firmware, but it think it involved removing/disabling any CD-R software (Nero, Roxio, etc) and doing a cold boot of the machine, but I'm not positive. I'm looking for some notes that I may have taken, but I can't find them either. I might have also went from the original firmware to 2.11, then to 2.12. The PC was a Dimension 4550 Series,Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.53GHz.

Let us know how it turns out for you.
