So you could in fact install any version of java which you wanted - even previous ones. It is that Java Web start on that page did not work for you for any java that you tried. I guess, other than that installed java worked in your browser for appltes, etc. You of course need to have java installed on your computer and enabled to install that web start app. I thought that you had too advanced java and this webstart didn't work (these things do happen), but it looks from waht you describe that it is something different.

In fact, Apple actually has their own semi-budget option. Buy word for mac.

Do you know anyone who installed that Java web start application from Cisco at all? I think that for the long run uyou should contact the vendor. And they should change their installation to be compativble with the latest java. In the meantime I think you are pursuing the right way - try to find someone who was more or less the latest who installed it and check waht kind of Java version they have and try to return to that version of java which was compatible with this installation.

We have similar problem with a couple of our internal applications, but I was able to find some middle ground, so that the application I needed was still possible to install.
